Conversations about livestock development took place at the 82nd North Dakota Winter Show. A panel hosted by the North Dakota Livestock Alliance highlighted the opportunities for diversification and expansion of livestock in the state. “It can add a secondary marketing opportunity to your crop farm,” explains NDLA Executive Director Amber Boeshans. “You can also then have utilization for your crop residues.” Taking part in the panel discussion was Scott German, an Oakes crop and hog farmer. In times of volatile markets, German says livestock can help take the ups and downs out. “If we can lower local basis levels 10 or 15 cents, that’s real money directly back into the producer’s pocket,” says German.
