North Dakota farmers are heading into the 2026 growing season with a very low risk of wheat midge infestations. Soil surveys conducted by NDSU Extension found zero wheat midge cocoons in fall samples, marking the first time since the survey began in 1995 that this has happened. Entomologists say the results indicate extremely low overwintering populations and a minimal threat of economic damage to both spring and durum wheat this year.
