Cattle markets continue to push to new levels. For ranchers like Epiphany, South Dakota’s Cory Eich, the hope is for it to continue into the next generation. “Old highs become new lows, and I hope that’s where we’re heading for next couple of decades so the younger guys that are in it can have some good years and get going.” A herd rebuild is coming, but Eich says there are a lot of variables that go into it. “It’s going to be slow, you always have weather concerns and the age of producers is a big thing, too.” The current cost of retaining heifers is also a deterrent to herd expansion.
