North Border Seed Sales Agronomist Mark Torno says early-planted wheat struggled under the dry conditions in north-central North Dakota, but later-seeded crops are responding well. “The wheat that got in early, the yield is not going to be there. With the canola, the latter of the early crops seems like it is going to take advantage of the moisture as well as the soybeans.” Torno warns that weed pressure is becoming a bigger issue, with more cases of herbicide resistance showing up, even in fields that haven’t previously used certain chemistries. With harvest expected to begin within two weeks, he urges growers to monitor fields closely for weed escapes.
