Backgrounding is a popular choice this year for cattle producers. “You can delay marketing by backgrounding,” says Karl Hoppe, livestock systems specialist, North Dakota State University. “You can also add weight so you’re getting paid for more beef.” With low feed prices, Hoppe sees backgrounding as a way to add value to the crops and the cattle. NDSU Extension has created a series of videos full of backgrounding information on their website.
