Unseasonably warm temperatures have been seen across the Northern Plains for much of the winter. NDSU Rangeland Research Scientist Llewellyn Manske there are certain target dates to consider when turning cattle out to pasture this spring. Usually, the crested wheatgrass is ready to graze on the first of May and native range is ready to graze on the first of June,” said Mankse. “The grass growth is determined by the length of daylight, not the amount of soil moisture or heat so the three-and-a-half new leaf stage is going to be within one-or-two days of those dates.” Some ranchers were able to graze later in the season last fall. Manske says those pastures may need extra time to recover this spring.
