A winter storm working its way through the upper Midwest could drop anywhere from 12 to 24 inches. NDSU Livestock Environmental Stewardship Specialist Miranda Meehan says getting livestock out of the wind and onto dry bedding are the most important factors going into this winter storm. “We’re running out of time, but the biggest thing is wind protection, shelter, and making sure they have adequate, dry bedding.” Energy demands typically increase in cold weather, but Meehan says even after the storm, cattle might need a higher energy ration while they navigate muddy lots.
