The White House released a new plan overnight to bring more competition to meat and poultry market. Details are still coming in, but National Cattlemen’s Beef Association President Elect Don Schiefelbein is pleased with the plans to expand processing capacity. “It looks like they’re going to double the amount of dollars they’re going to invest in new meat processing plants from $500 million to $1 billion so that should jumpstart getting more competition and hopefully allow more medium and smaller-sized packers to get in there and compete more favorably.” The Biden Administration cites a lack of competition within the meatpacking business and is stepping up enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act. A new labeling law will also be implemented this year. “They don’t have a lot of details in there, but all we want is absolute accuracy when they put those labels on. Whether it is ‘Made in the USA’ or ‘Processed in the USA,’ we want to make sure there’s not vagueness in that description to keep consumers from knowing exactly what they’re purchasing.” Schiefelbein ranches at Kimball, Minnesota.
