The USDA Farm Service Agency met with farmers at the Northern Ag Expo on Wednesday. Of the many programs available to farmers through the FSA, two received the most questions: the Market Facilitation Program and WHIP plus program. FSA Deputy Administrator for Farm Programs Bill Beam wouldn’t say if there would be another MFP payment in January. “I would say stay tuned.” With a trying harvest, many farmers asked about the WHIP plus program. There’s a definite interest, due to cash flow needs. Stirum, North Dakota farmer Roger Zetocha told FSA cash flow is very important. “You can’t take a loan on a crop that’s out in the field. You need it in the bin,” said Zetocha. “This is impacting the whole state and a lot of people are hurting.” North Dakota Farm Service Agency State Executive Director Brad Thykeson explained the WHIP plus program won’t be a quick fix for cash flow. “It may go all the way into next summer. Farmers and bankers want to know what we can do for today’s cash flow. It will work, but it will take time and we ask for patience on behalf of the producer.” Listen to the story.
