Meeting with North Dakota farmers, USDA Risk Management Agency Administrator Martin Barbre fielded questions on prevent plant, revenue protection and quality discounts. “We’re looking for ways to make sure quality discounts don’t impact Actual Production History going forward.” Barbre says there are no plans to extend the end of the crop insurance periods, but farmers can contact their agents to request an extended period to harvest. “Farmers can ask for one month or whatever the company can grant. It allows farmers longer to harvest the crop,” explains Barbre. “The company will likely do an assessment of the crop at the end of the insurance period for a baseline. It doesn’t technically extend the insurance coverage, but during the extended harvest period any insurable cause of loss that happens to the crop will still be covered.” Barbre reminds farmers to stay in touch with their crop insurance agent.
