Wet harvest conditions caused quality issues for the durum grown in North Dakota and some of the crop is still in the field. The crop quality was a topic as farmers met in Minot for the 2019 Crop Outlook and International Durum Forum. U.S. Durum Growers Association President Blake Inman, who farms at Berthold, says they got all but 60 acres of durum harvested on their farm. “Not all of it is really great quality. Statewide, it’s hard to know the exact number, but 20-to-25 percent of the durum is still left in the field. Of the part that’s harvested, 40 percent is considered feed grade. There’s little mill-quality durum from the 2019 crop.” Farmers are also concerned about spring 2020. “We’ll have to deal with unharvested acres before seeding the new crop. If there’s lots of moisture over the winter, prevent plant may become an issue.”
