Fallout from the Ashby Farmers Elevator is raising many questions. Minnesota Grain and Feed Association Executive Director Bob Zelenka said when things like this happen, it makes the whole industry look bad. “We would like to address this in the upcoming legislative session.” There are ideas to help protect farmers from risk of an elevator failure, including insurance. “We’ve had discussion on tightening up financial requirements for elevators. The Department of Agriculture is doing more work in terms of verifying contracts. Lastly, they’re talking about implementing an indemnity fund available for farmers in a similar situation like Ashby.”
