USDA and FDA have announced a plan to jointly oversee production of cell-cultured food products, often referred to as ‘fake meat.’ National Cattlemen’s Beef Association President-Elect Jennifer Houston says this is a step in the right direction. “We feel very strongly that USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service should have daily, continuous inspections just like they do for conventional meat products. Also, USDA requires scientific basis for whatever is put on the labels.” Moving forward in the process, both agencies will have to review public comments. Danielle Beck, NCBA Director of Government Affairs, says USDA and FDA could then release the proposed rules for public comment. “That would add an additional step to the rulemaking process. At this point in time it’s still up in the air, but hopefully we have more of the framework within the next year.”
