Last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration held a public meeting to discuss oversight of cell-cultured food products. After discussion, it was concluded that both agencies should jointly oversee production of what is referred to as ‘fake meat.’ In the joint regulatory framework, FDA will oversee cell collection, banks, growth and differentiation. After a transition during the cell harvest stage, USDA will then oversee production and labeling of the food products derived from livestock and poultry. The public comment period has been extended and will remain open through December 26.
