USDA and the Food and Drug Administration lead a public meeting to discuss so-called ‘fake meat.’ An industry is being developed to produce cell-cultured protein products in labs. There has been disagreement over how this technology should be regulated and which agency has jurisdiction. During public comment, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association President-Elect Jennifer Houston explained that USDA is well-positioned to apply current food safety processes to ‘fake meat’ products. “Beef producers are more than willing to compete on a fair and level playing field. However, in this case, a fair and level playing field is as much about safety assurance systems as it is about nomenclature,” said Houston.
