The National Potato Council is urging the Trump administration to take stronger trade action against rapidly expanding Chinese frozen french fry exports, warning the surge is disrupting major export markets traditionally supplied by the United States. The potato industry says Chinese frozen fry exports have surged more than 2,000 percent in value over the past 7 years, sharply increasing competition in key Asian markets including Japan, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The National Potato Council is asking U.S. trade officials to raise tariffs on Chinese frozen fries from 43 percent to 100 percent and pursue broader international efforts aimed at addressing Chinese overcapacity and trade market distortions.
