With wet and cold weather, it’s been a slow sunflower harvest for Northern Plains farmers. According to National Sunflower Association Executive Director John Sandbakken, about 15 percent of sunflowers remain unharvested in the Dakotas. “So far, the quality has stayed very good,” says Sandbakken. “Obviously moisture has gone up and that’s why it’s taking longer. Farmers have been drying them or delivering directly to the plant or elevator.” However, the longer sunflowers remain unharvested, the more susceptible they will be to quality losses.
