According to Friday’s USDA acreage report, South Dakota farmers planted 6.1 million acres of corn this spring. That’s down three percent from a year ago. Soybean acres are unchanged from last year at 5.1 million. A total of 870,000 acres of winter wheat was seeded last fall, down five percent from one year ago. South Dakota’s spring wheat is down three percent at 720,000 acres. Oil-type sunflower acres are down 38 percent from a year ago. Non-oil sunflower acres declined 12 percent.
