There was a packed house for the gubernatorial debate at Farmfest. All five candidates shared the stage for this important event, taking place just ahead of the primary. Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty said the buffer law is an example of how not to treat farmers. “Farmers got stiff-armed in that process. They didn’t have a seat at that table. Let’s make sure if we ask farmers to take land out of production that we fairly pay them for it.” Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson, who is the other Republican candidate, said the State of Minnesota needs a new approach to taxes. “We take too much money from people. It’s not just property taxes; we have one of the highest income taxes in the country; one of the highest gas tax, one of the highest sales and the highest estate taxes. We need comprehensive tax reform.”
