The Northern Plains Potato Growers Association started back in 1946 when a group of Red River Valley potato growers decided the industry needed to be more united. NPPGA President Donavon Johnson says there’s been a lot of growth in that time. “The potato growers recognized they couldn’t do big research and address other issues all on their own. I think it’s so rewarding to see the collaboration and unity in the association,’ says Johnson. “Not only do we now have researchers and board leadership that direct the organization, we also have an organization called the Potato Associates. That’s a group of companies and individuals who are supporters of the industry. There’s a lot of good things happening for the Red River Valley potato industry.” At this time, there are no big in-person celebrations planned, but Johnson says that may change, COVID restrictions pending.
