In a report submitted to USDA, the American Sugar Alliance said the U.S. sugar industry remained stable this past year despite the uncertainties surrounding COVID and changing consumer buying habits. The report, which was written by industry economists Jack Roney and Rob Johansson, cited the diverse nature of sugar production in the United States. Half of America’s sugar production comes from sugarbeets in 11 states and the other half is from sugarcane grown in three states. The role of farmer-owned cooperatives was also recognized in the sugar industry’s ability to respond quickly to supply and demand challenges.
