Dry conditions are raising concerns about potato yields and quality in parts of the region. NDSU potato breeder Susie Thompson says wet conditions early in the season were followed by heat and dryness. “There possibly are going to be reduced yields,” Thompson said. “I know that there might be some quality issues with a few varieties, either like misshapen, or with some varieties we’re also seeing what are called heat sprouts where the new tubers either don’t form.” Thompson says potato breeding focuses on the changing needs of growers and different markets. “I tease that I have a crystal ball, but that is not quite correct. I listen to what growers have as far as their list of needs and wants.”
