South Dakota soybean leaders are exploring additional ways to expand soybean exports to international markets. South Dakota Soybean Council Director David Iverson recently visited the St. Lawrence Seaway and said the Great Lakes provide another transportation option for Midwest soybeans. Soybeans can move by rail and water through the Great Lakes, including through the ports of Milwaukee and Duluth. “It may not be a huge amount of soybeans that go compared to the Pacific Northwest, but it is another tool in our toolbox to be aware of the opportunities,” Iverson said. During Dakotafest, Iverson said additional export routes are important because international demand remains critical to the soybean industry. “Over half of the soybeans we produce need to find an international home. Every avenue that we can help facilitate in the soybean industry to get more products quicker is very much needed.”
