Fargo-based Lilac Ag has licensed research from North Dakota State University to develop seed inoculants for peas and lentils. Sales Agronomist Jake Delheimer said the technology is based on identifying native rhizobia strains that improve nitrogen fixation. “Dr. (Barney) Geddes’ research focused on isolating rhizobia native to North Dakota soils and identifying strains that outcompete others to form nodules,” Delheimer said. “The goal is to maximize nitrogen fixation, provide the plant with enough nitrogen and reduce the need for additional in-season nitrogen fertilizer.”
