Small grain harvest is getting underway in Minnesota, with early reports from southern parts of the state showing better-than-expected yields and good grain quality. University of Minnesota Extension Small Grains Specialist Jochum Wiersma says now is also the time for spring wheat growers to scout fields for Fusarium head blight, especially susceptible varieties planted after corn. Fields with more than one percent infected spikelets should be evaluated for DON risk, with combine adjustments or grain management strategies helping reduce potential discounts. Wiersma says winter wheat and winter rye harvest is also beginning, marking the start of a busy harvest season.
