Canola acreage continues to expand into new production areas as growers seek profitable crop rotation options. Northern Canola Growers Association President Mike Brekhus said interest in the crop is growing well beyond its traditional production footprint. “I think we’re growing into more non-traditional areas,” said Brekhus. “As you go toward Montana and then down into the Fargo area, there are more growers putting canola into the rotation.” Dry weather and high winds forced some replanting after emerging canola was damaged by blowing soil. “With the wind and the dirt flying around, it actually cut it off,” said Brekhus. “We had to reseed around 200 acres right away.”
