The House has passed the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026, sending the long-awaited farm bill to the Senate and marking the most significant progress in years. National Farmers Union President Rob Larew says the vote is an important step forward, but key gaps remain. “We haven’t seen this much movement in the farm bill, really, since the last farm bill was signed into law. There was a lot of work in trying to get that to this point.” Still, he says the bill misses opportunities, “particularly for things like year-round E-15.” He adds that the current proposal does not go far enough to address today’s farm economy. “What they basically put forward is just kind of the existing safety net with a few tweaks around the edges. Farmers would have really benefited from a much more serious attempt to make sure that we have a safety net in place that meets today’s moment.”
