There was no shortage of drama for the farm bill debate in the House. Policy Solutions President Jay Truitt sees an even bigger lift when the bill goes to the Senate. “I think the path in the Senate is virtually impossible at this point; there is too much baggage that people are going to want to hang on it as it moves the rest of the way through the process,” said Truitt. “This House passage becomes a good indicator of how we can maybe get another extension and maybe a longer-term extension at that.” The traditional farm bill debate seems to be evolving into two parts: one conversation focused on nutrition and the other on farm programs. Truitt sees a day when farmer-facing farm bill titles are part of a reconciliation bill and nutrition initiatives in a separate stand-alone vote.
