Farmers have always used on-farm storage as a marketing strategy. “It is really shocking how many growers are storing grain on farm for way longer period of time,” said John Mays, senior director of specialty agriculture, Central Life Sciences. It doesn’t matter if it is in the bin or in a bag, insects are a reality for stored grain. The risk increases when grain is stored longer. Mays recommends a grain protection protocol. That proactive approach begins at the start of the growing season. “As you’re delivering grain throughout the year and emptying the bins, have it in mind I’m going to have a good clean-out and start with sanitation; you can pre-treat it with a product like Gravista to ensure that you’re laying the groundwork for clean grain as you go into storage.”
