Federal officials are linking fertilizer supply challenges directly to broader national security concerns. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum emphasized the critical role agriculture plays beyond food production. “They’re not just feeding our nation, they’re providing the important element that food security equals national security, but it turns out we can’t have food security if we don’t have fertilizer security.” Burgum noted a significant shift in policy direction. “We’ve authorized 100 critical mineral permitting projects in the last 15 months, unlocking phosphate and potash, the core inputs.” He added that streamlining the process has been key to boosting domestic production. “We’ve taken permitting that took years, moved it down to literally weeks and months, we can go faster, and we can protect the environment. There’s no trade-off there.”
