Former North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp and former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu have written an op-ed piece for The Hill, making the case for a modern, coordinated federal approach to rural policy. They said policy has not kept pace with what is happening in Rural America, leaving many rural communities without the tools or capacity to deal with complex issues. Heitkamp and Sununu co-chair Brookings-AEI Commission on Rural Prosperity, which has held three field hearings nationwide, including stops at Wheatland, North Dakota and Mahnomen, Minnesota.
