Even if the Strait of Hormuz backup were cleared today, it would take time for fertilizer to move through the system. CHS President and CEO Jay Debertin says the concern is now shifting to this fall season. “While fall volumes aren’t usually what spring volumes are, it’s an important time of the year for farmers who want to put product down,” said Debertin. “We, like everybody, are hopeful that this gets into a better place, soon.” Debertin expects growers to adapt to this change in market conditions. “We’re looking at a couple of factors, one is crop switching by some and a little less application by others, but even if prices are low you need bushels to work with, so you don’t want to trim too much and suffer on yield.” In the interview with RRFN, Debertin also discusses the cooperative’s recent quarterly financials and the recovery from the recent fire at Warren, Minnesota.
