China is placing a renewed focus on food security and domestic farm production as part of its newly unveiled 15th Five-Year Plan. The strategy was highlighted this week during China’s annual parliamentary meetings in Beijing and sets a new grain production target of 725 million metric tons by 2030. Officials say the goal will rely heavily on technology, improved seed genetics, mechanization, and digital agriculture to boost yields as farmland becomes more limited due to urban expansion. Despite efforts to increase domestic output, China says it will continue relying on imports to meet food demand, particularly for soybeans and other feed grains used in livestock production. The plan also calls for reforms in China’s livestock sector, including managing oversupply in the hog industry while supporting domestic dairy and beef production.
