Canadian farmers expect some shifts in crop acreage for the 2026 growing season. Statistics Canada says producers plan to increase planted area for canola, barley, soybeans and corn, while acreage for wheat, oats, lentils and dry peas is expected to decline. National wheat acreage is projected at 26.7 million acres, down 1.1 percent from last year, while canola area is expected to rise slightly to 21.8 million acres. Soybean acreage could increase to 5.9 million acres and corn for grain is forecast at 3.8 million acres, led by a record planting pace in Ontario. Barley area is also expected to grow to 6.4 million acres. Meanwhile, farmers anticipate fewer acres of pulses, with lentils projected down 5.5 percent and dry peas falling more than 12 percent due to large supplies and weaker returns tied in part to trade tariffs.
