The FDA has approved the first bioequivalent cattle dewormer. Defendazole has the same active ingredient in the Safe-Guard brand-name product. Norbrook Technical Services Veterinarian Dr. Megan Bollin says deworming is critically important. “Internal parasites present a significant cost to all sectors of the beef industry, through reducing feed intake, reducing weaning weights, reproduction, and other performance indicators,” said Bollin. “Which costs the producer a lot of money, right?” Bollin encourages cattle producers to work closely with their local veterinarian. “For the herds that are experiencing any kind of level of parasite resistance to the treatments that we have available using Defendazole as part of that concurrent deworming program can be a great option for them.”
