The latest USDA WASDE report reinforced large grain supplies, pushing market attention toward basis and away from futures prices. Midwest Market Solutions President Brian Hoops says local production differences will play a major role in how basis develops this winter. “Basis is a local condition, basis in North Dakota may be different basis than what it is in Nebraska or Iowa, and it will react differently,” Hoops explained, noting that USDA highlighted strong yield increases in North Dakota while Iowa saw lower yields. Hoops says farmer selling remains limited, keeping grain locked in storage, and forcing end users to work harder to source supplies. “I do think the bin doors have been slammed shut pretty hard for the near term, and until we get into the spring, summer weather event, there’s not gonna be much in the way of selling,” he said. Hoops added that some areas may see basis improve enough to trigger limited cash sales, but larger movement will likely wait until later in the year.
