With many farmers preparing for their fall fertilizer applications, Agvise Soil Scientist John Breker says it all starts with soil sampling. “With fertilizer prices as high as they are, it’s important to have up-to-date soil test information so you know that you’re applying the right rate and the right parts of the fields.” Breker says flat-rate applications are a thing of the past. “Farmers should be thinking about zone sampling and trying to tailor those fertilizer applications to the specific productivity areas in a field. Once you have that information, it’s time to start making some decisions about if you have a window to put on fall-applied fertilizer or wait until spring.”
