A large corn and soybean crop is on the horizon and storage is at a premium. NDSU Agricultural Engineer Ken Hellevang says there are alternatives that farmers can consider. “An existing building certainly would be one option, but many of our buildings aren’t designed to hold grain so make sure that the walls are strong enough. Grain bags and piling corn on the ground are options, but they come with their own risks. “More and more guys are using the grain bags,” said Hellevang. “It’s a little more of a process to fill the bags, but they have worked well as long as the grain is dry growing in.” If corn is in a pile, Hellevang warns that temperature and moisture levels should be closely monitored.
