Donny Allmaras, who operates Allmaras Ag in the Bremen/New Rockford area, planted his plot on May 5. The daytime high reached 83 degrees that day. It got hotter after that with the temps over 90 degrees May 11, 12 and 13. “We’re now at 1,660 Growing Degree Units for this field,” Allmaras told RRFN. “The difference between planting May 5 or May 15 was 160 GDUs so that will certainly play a factor this fall when we get closer to a freeze.” Allmaras would like to stay frost-free through the end of September. That would get most of the 82-day to 86-day hybrids fully mature. For soybeans, waterhemp is a bigger issue than ever before. The full interview can be found online.
