The Beginning Farmer Tax Credit is one piece of unfinished business that will likely get attention in the 2026 Minnesota Legislature. This tax credit was expanded in 2023, but the Legislature lowered the funds available a year later. Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy wants that cap lifted in the next session. “Next year, we’re going to spend a fair amount of time on capital investment on infrastructure; I think of the Beginning Farmer (Tax) Credit as infrastructure,” said Murphy. “We are investing in the next generation of farmers.” Murphy said she hopes more can be done with this credit because it will invite people into an industry that is vital to the state.
