House Agriculture Committee Ranking Member Angie Craig is warning that newly announced tariffs will have devastating consequences for U.S. farmers. “What I saw yesterday (Wednesday) was jaw-dropping, it was worse than I could have anticipated,” said Craig. “I don’t think this was what a lot of folks who voted for the administration expected, I don’t think it’s what they voted for.” Craig emphasized that farmers rely heavily on export markets. “The real winner here today is countries like Brazil, who obviously came out ahead after the 2018 trade war, but frankly, our farmers were in a lot better shape in that first trade war. Input costs up, commodity prices down—it’s much worse this time around.”
