The agricultural sector is facing significant financial strain due to high input costs, falling commodity prices, and market instability. American Farm Bureau Economist Bernt Nelson said these conditions could signal an agricultural recession. “There’s some pretty serious financial strain happening,” Nelson noted, pointing to December corn futures at $4.40 levels, which he described as unprofitable. Nelson warned that factors like tariffs and high planting estimates could further drive prices down, making profitability even more elusive. “There’s enough happening, enough turmoil in the market that we could still see some price changes and price shifts.” Despite projections of over 95 million acres of corn being planted, Nelson emphasized the uncertainty, suggesting market conditions could still shift unexpectedly.
