South Dakota farmers plan to increase corn and sunflower acreage this year while reducing soybean and winter wheat plantings, according to USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service Field Office in Sioux Falls. Corn acreage is expected to rise 7 percent to 6.3 million acres, while sunflower acres will jump 36 percent to 380,000. Soybean acreage is projected to decline 6 percent to 5.1 million acres. Spring wheat acres remain unchanged at 660,000, and winter wheat acres seeded last fall are down 7 percent to 800,000 acres.
