Hail hit portions of the central Red River Valley this past week. “Hail is devastating for the wheat crop, corn crop, maybe even the soybean crop,” said Tom Peters, Extension sugarbeet agronomist. “Our sugarbeet crop can rebound from that.” Peters said beets are resilient but will experience lower yield and sucrose levels. “The sugarbeet crop does have the capability to regrow leaves and they’ll certainly heal, but just maybe not to the degree from before taking damage from hail.”
