Heartland Limousin Association Executive Secretary Dean Summerbell sees two main factors impacting commercial cattle prices. “Cattle population is down and quality is up.” Quality improvements have come from the development of estimated progeny differentials or EPDs over the years with the help of university research. One major improvement has been docility. “That’s led to a better carcass; they’re not running into the middle of the feedlot when somebody drives up.” Summerbell also cited feed efficiency and feed quality as major areas of improvement for the cattle industry.
