USDA released a new report on rural population trends this past week. “The main findings from the report are first that the rural population is aging and also that the working-age population has declined over the last decade,” said Jim Davis, economic researcher. “The second main finding is that industry job reallocation has moved jobs out of traditional mainstay rural industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, and retail; the job growth has occurred more in services industries such as healthcare, hospitality, and services.” The report determined the rural workforce has become more racially and ethnically diverse in recent years.
