U.S. Custom Harvesters President J.C. Schemper says the drought hurt the Southern Plains wheat crop. “We started harvest May 25 in Oklahoma. and one teammate averaged 18 bushels per acre. It was good test weight at 63 pounds. Protein is good, due to the drought.” The drought impacted many of the cropping decisions. “Farmers did not know whether or not to put money into it. There are tough decisions being made and a lot of people left it. I’m now in southern Kansas. If this crop yields 20 bushels per acre, we’ll be lucky.”
