Waterhemp is the most important weed for sugarbeet growers in the Red River Valley. During the American Crystal Sugar Company Grower Seminar, Extension Sugarbeet Specialist Tom Peters said waterhemp control is very complicated. “Gone are the days of one, two or three glyphosate applications.” A lay-by application using a pre-emergence, early-post and post-emergence weed control program is now the standard. This creates a barrier in the soil to prevent waterhemp from germinating and emerging. Palmer amaranth is another significant weed issue in the region. Peters cited two local cases where Palmer was traced back to feed and screenings that were fed to animals. “If you see something that looks suspicious, call me,” said Peters. “I don’t care if it is day or night, I want to get that call because it is critical that we identify Palmer amaranth before it gets established.”
