Understanding Ag partner Gabe Brown says there’s six core principles to regenerative agriculture that helps improve topsoil regeneration and water cycling. “Number one is context; nature always operates in context. The second principle is least amount of chemical or mechanical disturbances possible. The third principle is armor on the soil; nature always tries to keep the soil covered. The fourth principle is diversity because nowhere in nature can you find monoculture. The fifth principle is keeping living root in the soil as long as possible and the final principle is animal and insect integration. Nature and ecosystems can’t function properly without animals and insects.” According to Brown, there are more microorganisms in a teaspoon of healthy soil than there are people on the planet and it’s those microorganisms that drive plant health. “When we till the soil, we’re destroying the home for this biology and lowering water infiltration while making soil more prone to wind and water erosion.” Brown spoke at the Northern Plains Food and Farming Conference in Fargo.
