According to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, the 2020 and 2021 WHIP+ program payments will be distributed in two tranches this spring. There’s $9.25 billion available for farmers who suffered losses due to natural disasters like drought and flooding. The USDA will use existing crop insurance data for the calculations. “We hope to use NAP data and RMA crop insurance data to create a pre-filled out application to speed up the process of a first tranche of resources to those producers and a second tranche for losses in areas that weren’t covered or farmers who didn’t have coverage.” When it comes to the $750 million for the livestock industry, Vilsack says the USDA is looking at a process to use existing data from the Livestock Forage Program. “We’re trying to simplify the process to get resources to these farmers as quickly as possible.”
